Venture capital opportunities abound but are hard to identify at an early stage.

Why Invest in Green Buildings?

Incremental innovations to the current built environment structure will not advance the industry in a meaningful and impactful way. The existing structure is antiquated and must be disrupted to create the value needed to meet the rapidly changing demands of the industry. Even with the advancement of emerging technology trends like AR/VR, robotics and automation, big data/IoT/connected job sites, blockchain, and BIM, the industry still struggles with labor shortages, addressing demand, sustainability needs, cost controls, affordability, and efficiency gains. So the industry, increase the value of other innovations, and tackles industry challenges. The answer: industrialized construction technology

  • Climate Risk is an Investment Risk: The built environment is seeing marked growth in the number of startups rethinking the way we design, build, and operate.

  • Ubiquity & affordability of tech: Unlike a decade ago, owners, lenders, appraisers, builders, designers, and subcontractors carry smart devices. The basic technological platforms are already on-site and readily used by all parties for the first time.

  • Environmental Crisis: Global countries and private organizations are facing a crisis concerning the climate, evolving sustainability standards, and infrastructure needs of growing urban populations.

  • Growing Sustainable Investing: Climate change is the most important ESG issue accounting for $4.2 trillion in assets under management. Firms, like BlackRock, are explicit in climate impacts in their investments.

  • New Legislations: Regulators at the state and local levels in the US have enacted laws targeting the built environment with aggressive emissions reduction targets, similar to Europe and Asia.

  • Resilience as Risk Management: Real estate is one of the asset classes most impacted by climate change. About 35% of REITs properties are exposed to climate hazards. Resilience must be a factor in assessing investment risk.
